Limmud: 7th & 8th Grade

KITAH ZAYIN AND KITAH CHET

 (7th and 8th Grade)

Limmud: Middle School Program for 7th and 8th Grade Students gives students a year of engaging learning, hands-on activities, and community building and bonding. The curriculum for these students is designed to help our students answer some of the central questions of adolescence: Who am I? To Whom and to What am I connected? To whom and for What am I responsible in this world? How can I make a difference in this world?

Our curriculum is divided into 4 primary units:

Comparative Religion which begins with the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington’s Annual Unity Walk on Sunday, September 11th.  We will be visiting several places of worship and meeting with representatives from churches, mosques and synagogues. Our study will include an examination of Reconstructionist Judaism.

Helping Others with Our Hands and Our Financial Resources

We will partner with several organizations (focused on the environment, immigration and housing) to learn about what they do, the population they serve and how they are funded.  We’ll then engage with them on hands-on service-learning projects.  SSL hours can be earned.   This unit will also include the American Jewish World Service philanthropy curriculum to help us decide, as a class, organizations we would like to help financially (get those Tzedakah boxes out!).

Never Again: Confronting Genocide through a Creative Lens (including the Shoah)

Through film, video, photography, painting, music, poetry, theater and other expressive forms, we will study several examples of genocide throughout history, particularly the Shoah, including its impact on survivors.  Each participant will create their own creative work that might shine a light on a particular situation, person or group, provide comfort and/or inspire others to fight injustice. In addition to a visit to the United States Holocaust Museum. we will be taking an overnight journey to Baltimore and the Visionary Art Museum.

Israel

The creation of a modern independent and pluralistic homeland for the Jewish people has been central to the vitality and future of the Jewish people. During our exploration of modern Israel we will become acquainted with Israel’s history from the beginnings of modern Zionism in the 19th century through the State’s 75 years. We will get to know Israel experientially through its spectacular music and its marvelous culinary traditions. We will also consider the complicated political situation in Israel and Palestine and how we as American Jews can think about Israel both critically and lovingly. Our Israel unit will include a celebration of the State’s special independence anniversary.

Time and Place:

The class meets on Sunday mornings at Adat Shalom from 10am-12pm. There will be occasions that we’ll meet at different times and places for field trips and special projects.
