Tikkun Olam Mission Statement

Tikkun Olam Mission Statement

“The Mitzvah of Tikkun Olam obliges us to work toward the prevention of hunger, homelessness, disease, ignorance, abuse, and political oppression among all people as well as to work toward preserving the health of the global ecosystem upon which all life depends. We recognize that while charitable acts have great value, Tikkun Olam may be best achieved by empowering those who are disenfranchised. We seek to reach out to, and work in partnership with, others with whom we share a common vision.”  Tikkun Olam at Adat Shalom includes the activities found below and all are represented by an Adat Shalom Board Member.

Board Member:  Marilyn Kresky-Wolf

In 5783 (2022-2023) our priorities are:

Racial Equity

We are participating with other local Jewish congregations in the SEA Change initiative, which is designed to help us examine our practices that have an impact on racial equity in our own communal spaces, and to work with one or more local social justice organizations to advance anti-racist policies in the wider community.

We are joining other Reconstructing Judaism congregations to support the Reparations Resolution that has been drafted by our national organization to motivate Congress to address unjust policies that have systematically targeted African-Americans and Indigenous Peoples.

Immigration

We advocate with our Senators and Representatives in Congress in support of HIAS-sponsored priorities to support refugees and asylum seekers. Click here for more information.

As a member of the interfaith Congregation Action Network (CAN), Adat Shalom members have the opportunity to assist immigrants when they interact with immigration authorities, join directly impacted area congregations in local action, provide area immigrants with material support, and advocate at county and state level for policies that are just and fair for all residents.

Gun Violence Prevention

We work with Beth Ami and Kol Shalom congregations to support the advocacy work of Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence. Safe storage of firearms in the home is an ongoing priority.
