The Haiti Project is a tangible and meaningful Tikun Olam project and we invite your involvement.

Pastor Johnny Felix is the founder and principal of the NICL School. When asked how he overcame the considerable odds of building an elementary school in a country facing political unrest and perpetual poverty, Pastor Johnny said: “I feel like God has chosen me for this task. It is why I was put on earth. I love children.”

Thanks to the generosity of 70+ Adat Shalom families, the Haiti Project has:

  • Provided food baskets to every household in the NICL community, many of whom are food insecure. We will repeat this effort once again this summer – see below for your opportunity to participate.
  • Built a playground and two new classrooms (2018 mission) allowing NICL to welcome 7th and 8th grades.
  • Built an entire new building (2014 and 2016 missions) that now houses a 15 station computer lab and an assembly room.
  • Provided an annual subsidy to help pay teacher’s salaries, buy equipment and allow about 20% of the students to enroll at a reduced tuition level.
  • Sent 75 Adat Shalom members on five missions to Haiti where they spent 8 days building community with the NICL staff, teachers, and students and working with Pastor Johnny on the above concrete projects.

We have learned that the Haiti Project is an excellent way for Adat Shalom to advance the Jewish values that have long informed our sacred community.
