CHORDS OF GLORY: PERFORMANCE WITH A PURPOSE is a program for middle and high school students passionate about music, theater, and movement to share their passion with people who, for reasons of age, disability, illness, or economic hardship cannot experience live performance. As an added bonus, students can earn service-learning credits needed for Montgomery County Public Schools, DC Public Schools and other organizations.
WHO: Sixth through twelfth graders with an interest in both the performing arts and community service. Adat Shalom participants must be enrolled in Adat Shalom Limmud Programs or contribute to services by reading Torah, Haftarah or leading D’var discussions at Shabbat morning services.
WHAT: Weekly 2-hour meetings in a workshop setting during which participants work on a variety of songs. Once a repertoire is set, we will travel to and perform in person and online at area senior centers, shelters, hospitals, and other venues, as well as at Adat Shalom. Over the past 2 years Chords has performed (in person and on Zoom) for audiences at Shepherd’s Table, Regency Care of Arlington, Open Arms Housing, and The Jewish Council for Aging’s Kensington Clubs. Chords has also partnered in song with the GenOUT Youth Chorus, an outreach ensemble of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC for LGBTQ+ and allied youth.
WHEN: Sunday, October 2, 2022 through Sunday, June 18, 2023 from 3:15-5:15 pm (for the most part, Chords follows the MCPS calendar). Every effort will be made to schedule performances during these Sunday hours. There will also be occasional appearances at Shabbat morning services.
COST: $360 for Adat Shalom members; $540 for non-members. Up to 60 hours of SSL Credit will be given.
