Sermon and Program Summaries

Rabbi Rachel: Second day Rosh Hashana

“Rachel’s Tears: What Our Biblical And Contemporary Mothers Say About Grief, Healing And Resilience”

The banner headline of Rosh HaShana is: “Today the world is conceived!” Our prayers affirm the ongoing promise of new life. In contrast, our Biblical texts explore the complexity, pain and power of that aspect of our humanity. Rabbi Rachel is curious about how our Rosh HaShana mothers Sarah, Rachel and Hannah teach us about parenthood through their experiences, and how their stories connect with our search for healing and resilience in this moment.

Rabbi Sid, Kol Nidre

“Listening to Angels”

Unless one decides to live “off the grid”, there is no escaping the impact of technology, social media and, now, artificial intelligence on our world. One consequence is that our lives have sped up to a degree that makes a thoughtful and spiritually fulfilling life more difficult to achieve. In his annual Kol Nidre sermon, Rabbi Sid will share some thoughts about how we can “listen for the angels” in our lives.

Steve and Jody Shapiro & Pesach-Lev Zeitz, Yom Kippur Afternoon

“Experience Devekut, a God Consciousness imbued with Love, through sacred Hebrew chanting and meditation”

Please join this contemplative session where we will explore the practice of Devekut or the experience of God consciousness imbued with love and “at-ONE-ment” using the teachings of Shir Hashirim/Song of Songs from Rabbi Shefa Gold’s Love at the Center.  Though reality appears to us as multiplicity, the awakened inner eye knows and sees All as One. Can we install a constant remembrance of a love-centered God consciousness, even as we engage with the multiplicity, the vast variety of myriad experiences of our lives?

Congressman Jamie Raskin, Yom Kippur Afternoon

At the hardest moment in his personal life, at one of the most troubling moments in our country’s history, Jamie Raskin fought for a vision of justice and enduring hope. Join Adat Shalom on Yom Kippur afternoon as Congressman Raskin shares from his personal experiences and the wisdom of the Torah.
