Our weekend of learning and singing, exploring and connecting is getting close. The inaugural Director of Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for Reconstructing Judaism, Rabbi Lawson is a renowned leader in the Reconstructionist movement, the extended Jews of Color community, and far beyond. With work that flows straight from Jewish tradition – as echoed in the Reconstructionist movement’s long-range plan, and in Adat Shalom and other area synagogue’s SEA Change effort – Rabbi Sandra will inspire and challenge us with the most communal and timely Torah.
Friday night 4/21: At Columbia Jewish Congregation and on Zoom
Rabbi Sandra’s reflections, teachings, and melodies will punctuate CJC’s erev Shabbat services, followed by an overview of her and the movement’s holy work. 7:30pm: Rabbi Sandra’s reflections, teachings, and joyous melodies will punctuate and elevate our Erev Shabbat services. In partnership with Adat Shalom and the broader Reconstructionist movement.
8:45pm: Services will be followed by “Sweets and Sicha [conversation]” — an opportunity to chat with Rabbi Sandra Lawson while nibbling on sweet treats. She will address the questions of What does antiracism mean in our day and within the context of Judaism?and When it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion, where is our movement leading us and what is the greater vision?

9:30am Shabbat morning services with Rabbi Sandra Lawson — “Equity, Earth, and Enlightenment: the Intersection of Judaism, Racial Justice, Earth Day, and Our Spiritual Journeys”. Rabbi Sandra’s reflections, teachings, and melodies will punctuate Adat Shalom’s morning service. With special reference to Earth Day and environmental justice; in partnership with Columbia Jewish Congregation and the broader Reconstructionist movement.
12:00pm Vegetarian Oneg Shabbat luncheon
1:00pm Achrei (after) Oneg (same zoom): “Brilliance and Blind Spots: What our Textual Tradition Does (and Doesn’t) Offer, Toward our Radically Inclusive Future,” Rabbi Sandra Lawson. After the oneg on Shabbat afternoon, we will dig deep into the classic Jewish sources. We will study and discuss both what we can draw from, and what we must together reconstruct, in order to bring about the ‘Beloved Community’ that is our common goal.

2:40pm “The Reconstructionist Pilgrimage to Civil Rights Sites, ‘Reckoning Together’: Moving Moments, Challenging Conversations, Brainstorming a Better Future”. Earlier this year, 200 Reconstructionist Jews traveled to Alabama and Georgia to confront history, build community, and chart a path forward; many were from our shul and our region. Rabbi Sandra, together with trip participants, will help us learn from this remarkable pilgrimage, so we can help our community and movement and Jewish world work out our next steps together.

10:45am “Creating a Radically Inclusive Jewish Community for the Future: Best Practices in Synagogue DEIJ Work”. We will hear more about Rabbi Sandra’s groundbreaking work through Reconstructing Judaism, and will learn as well from the experiences of other synagogue communities and other denominations. Those serving on Boards and in leadership of area synagogues are especially invited to attend. No area is focus is more important for Jewish communities in our time; let’s learn and grow together.
