Activities
Projects & DescriptionsFood Can Jam – Contribute, pack and/or deliver non-perishable food for those in need (second Shabbat each month). Manna Food Center – Pack food boxes for needy families (third Tuesday evening every month). Good family activity. Kans for Kol Nidre/Passover & Rosh Hashanah Food Projects – Bring a grocery bag of canned goods to Kol Nidre services; deliver food at holiday times to needy Jewish families, including many elderly immigrants. Shelter Christmas at Shepherd’s Table – Provide meals (and company) to homeless men, women and families at this Silver Spring shelter on Christmas, eve and/or daytime CBS Shelter – Serve dinner at Rockville shelter one evening during designated Adat Shalom week (usually late August/ early September). Sukkot in Spring (with YACHAD) – Help repair or improve the home of someone in need. Good for adults, children over 14. Environment Environmental Education/Action – Get involved with various environment-al issues and service activities, at Adat Shalom and in the larger community. Long a signature area of Adat Shalom’s social action efforts, let’s keep the momentum going. “Think globally, act locally,” by helping to protect Creation through Adat Shalom (see www.coejl.org for more on eco-Judaism). Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) – Educational efforts focused on the importance of organic and locally grown food (which may soon include creating, learning in, and farming our own onsite organic garden!) Interfaith Friends in Action – Adat Shalom sponsors a team, through Interfaith Works (formerly Community Ministry of Montgomery County), that mentors and provides logistical support for a family emerging from poverty. Interfaith Action – Help shape and advance new initiatives to broaden Adat Shalom engagement on interfaith issues through dialogue and civic action. Advocacy Advocacy Subcommittee – Explore opportunities for community-based political action/advocacy, under the Tikkun Olam Guidelines – to date, besides Darfur, we’ve focused on same-sex marriage equality in Maryland. International Ending Darfur’s Genocide – Plan and participate in local and regional initiatives to stop the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan (see www.save Darfur.org). Adat Shalom has long been a leader in this ‘issue’ that has gone on far too long. Don’t forget; don’t give up; don’t stop doing what you can. Youth, Families, and Lifestyle Kids’ Care – Tikkun Olam projects for families with children ages six and under (siblings and others welcome!). A joint project with the Community Life Committee. “Lunch Bunch” tutoring – Adults from our community tutor students in a local public elementary school.
Youth Committee – Inquire about Tikkun Olam activities with and for Adat Shalom youth (both pre- and post-Bnai Mitzvah). New Ideas Social Action Committee – Share your ideas for new social action projects, and help make them happen. Please join us!
